Basement Bathroom Remodeling

Last year's remodeling of my master bathroom went well enough that I decided to go ahead and fix up the basement bath. This one hadn't suffered the damage that the master bath had (and in fact was what I'd been using while waiting to fix it). Still, it needed some help.

There is some drywall damage from the same leak that did in the master bath. That needs to get fixed, along with some other fix-ups and improvements.

If you're interested in seeing what the final version looks like, skip to the finished pictures at the end here.

Once again, I wasn't good about taking "before" pictures to compare to, but at least I started the photos before doing major changes.

The closet in the guest bedroom (backing up on the shower) also had some damage from the same leak that did in the master bath. Time for me to go ahead and fix that. Here's the exploratory work.

More time and a little more work.

May 11, 2017

More work taking out stuff that needs it, and an odd discovery.

May 14 – August 4, 2017

Following success in the master bath, I decided to build a whole new replacement vanity cabinet, along with a wall cabinet over the toilet and a magazine rack to go with it. Sarah's help make the shop work easier and more fun, and getting Dave's tablesaw means we have the right tool to use. Here is a record of building them.

More demolition and reconstruction

June 2, 2017

Time for more drywall and electrical work on the bath. I decided to add a light in the shower because I could, and so that it would be brighter if I decided on a taller shower door.

Time for more work on the bathroom itself.

July 6, 2017

More work finishing the cabinetry.

August 15, 2017

Back to working on the bathroom itself. Most of the drywall is now done, though not textured, as is the first step of fixing the shower tile.

August 26, 2017

The drywall is all done now, taped, sanded and textured. It's time for paint. I did primer on some of the areas some water stains, to be extra safe.

A coat of paint makes things look a lot better.

September 11, 2017

Put down the floor tile and install the vanity.

Towel bars, shower door and baseboards in place. I Need to fill some seams around the baseboards, and do some touch-up, but... progress.

September 20, 2017

Almost done. The baseboards are done, with some seam filling and touch-up. Then I installed the mirror, toilet, magazine rack, robe hooks, and heater, and replaced the doorknobs and hinges. I still need to caulk the shower and sink, but it's starting to look like a real bathroom.

Done! The last step included some essential things like installing a toilet-paper holder, and caulking the shower (I already have enough experience with leaks, thank you). I also added a bit more decoration to make things more welcoming.
