Master Bathroom Remodelling

After intending to do so for 10 years or so, I finally got around to remodeling my master bathroom. The shower had suffered some damange from a roof-leak back then, and I've just been using the other bathrooms in the house. The colors show that the bathroom dates back to when the house was built in 1977.

If you're interested in seeing what the final version looks like, skip to the finished pictures at the end here.

I really should have taken pictures of the whole bath to have a "before" image to compare to. At least I have this one.

First comes demolition. I rented a dumpster and started tearing out the old tile and wallboard. The toilet and sink are going to be be replaced too. I decided to keep the tub, as it's a big hassle and expense to replace, and I can live with that one piece of color.

Jan 21, 2016

Now it's time to start putting in the new (or replacement) stuff.

Jan 22, 2016

Here's the rest of the cement-board installed. It's also time to start picking colors for tile for the tub-wall and floor.

Feb 4, 2016

Not much work this past week. But I did pick the tile to use around the tub and on the floor and buy the materials.

Feb 14, 2016

Finally started putting up the tile around the shower.

Feb 16, 2016

More tile work on the shower.

Feb 24, 2016

And yet more tile installed.

Feb 26, 2016

Finally got all of the tile up. Next step is cleanup and grout.

Feb 28, 2016

The great grout. All the grouting between tiles is done, but we still have to caulk seams that may flex and apply edge trim.

Feb 28, 2016

The last touches before taking a break for vacation. Kurt finished installing the plumbing for the shower, and I put up the towel-rod at the foot of the tub. Vacuuming up the crud in the tub also improves things.

March-April, 2016

I took a break from remodelling to take a Trip to Japan. That brought work on the bathroom to a halt for a while. Trip preparation and taking care of things after I returned took priority, because they could.

May 11, 2016

Now that I'm back from vacation, time to get working on the bathroom again. First came washing the wallpaper paste off the one wall that was wallpapered (otherwise it would cause problems with paint).

May 13, 2016

After patching the drywall, it's time to sand and texture the patches. Since the previous photos, the patches were sanded, filled and sanded smooth again, then covered with spray-on texture.

May 18, 2016

Since the new vanity top is wider than the existing cabinet, I'll build a magazine rack and shelves to fill out the extra space.

May 19, 2016

The magazine rack is taking form and fitting into place. Test fit it to see whether it works as designed.

May 22, 2016

Time to paint.

May 24, 2016

After the walls, it's the vanity's turn to get painted.

May 26, 2016

Finishing up the vanity base and replacing the light fixture came next.

May 27, 2016

Buy a faucet, other plumbing stuff and door hardware, then install it. The sink and vanity are now "done".

June 1, 2016

Lay the floor tile and install the baseboards. The room's actually starting to come together.

June 5, 2016

With the floor down and (mostly) sealed, it's finally time to install the toilet and caulk around the tub and shower tile.

June 6, 2016

Are we done yet?

I think I've finished with everything I was planning on for the bath. I still need to check to make sure I haven't missed anything that needs touch-up or fixing, but that doesn't stop my taking "I'm done" pictures

June 10, 2016

A few more finishing touches. And the bathroom is actually usable, too.

June 22, 2016

I decided to build a cabinet to go over the toilet. It will have shelves where I can put my glasses while washing my face, as well as room to store other things as well. I didn't see anything in the stores that caught my eye, so I decided to build one to match the vanity.

Here are some shots of the cabinet under construction.

June 28, 2016

The cabinet's now complete and installed. I like the way it looks, and I think it'll be a useful place to stash stuff, too.

July 31, 2016

The finishing touch is a bit of decoration on the shelves over the toilet.

Dec 13, 2016

Now that winter's coming, it's time to add that heater I put in the outlet for. It takes the chill off the room and makes showering in the cold weather nicer.

Apr 2, 2017

The heater is nice addition, but I keep forgetting to turn it off which isn't good for the electric bill, among other things. So, I fixed that issue by adding a timer to control it. I was able to install this to switch one of the two outlets on the fixture the heater is plugged into.
